What is a liver Transplant ?

A liver transplant is a procedure to remove the damaged liver and replace it with a healthy one from a donor.

The liver is the largest internal organ inhuman body. It processes nutitrients, harmones and absorbs fat. It also helps preventing infections, controlling immune responses and in making protients that help blood clot. It stores vitamins, minerals, fats and sugar.

A transplant is the only cure for liver filaure because, unlike oragns such as Kidney, no device has been invented that can perform the functions of liver.

When is a liver transplant required ?

A transplant is suggested when a liver is damaged and can not perform its regular functions. The liver can get damaged (liver cirrrhosis) due to infection such as hepatitis or achohol abuse. A liver failure can also happen due to inflamation or death of a liver tissue (liver necrosis). Cange of cer of liver can also be a cuase for liver transplant.

When is a liver transplant not advised ?

Not every individual with damaged liver is advised a transplant. A patient should be ale to survive the operation and any complications that arise out it. He should be able to take the medications that prevent rejection on new liver and any infections. A patient who suffers from cancer in another part of the body or has severe medical illness of heart, lung, neurological conditions , hypertesnsion, etc or who has a history of active achohol and drug abuse is advised not to go for a transplant.

What are the types of liver donation ?

There are two sources of liver donation:

Deceased: a liver removed from a person who has died recently.

Living: The liver has the ability to regenerate itself. So , a part of liver of a living donor is removed transplanted.

Since the demand for the deceased liver far outstrips the supply, the Living donor transplant is the most common method used.

Who can donate a liver ?

The donation of portion of the liver should be done voluntarily without any coercion or monetary incentive. The donor should be less than 50 years of age, body mass index of less than 25 and should be near relative of the recipient. Both the donor and the patient should have the same blood group. The donor has right to withdraw anytime without giving any reasons.

A non-related donor needs permission of an Authorization Committee established by the state to donate his organs

What are the complications of liver transplant ?

The recipient is successful in 90-95%. About 90% of patients survive after one year and about 80% of them survive for more than 5 years. Some of the typical complictions include the body rejecting a new liver, risk of infection, thrombosis of blood vessels going into or out of the liver, loss of kidney function , risk of certain types of cancer. It is also possible that the original problem that lead to liver transplant may affect the new liver.

What is the post operative care required in case of a liver transplant ?

The patient needs an intensive follow up for about a year. He needs regular blood tests to identify any complications such as damage or rejection of liver or any other complications. He needs to take the prescribed medications as per the dcotor's advice.
