What is Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery ?

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) is a process by which coronary heart diseases (CAD) can be treated. CAD includes narrowing of blood arteries that act as a passage for the blood & oxygen flow along with the other nutrients. These problems begin to occur once the fat accumulation is so much that it causes a blockade of the passage, thus causing hindrances in the blood circulation and flow of such nutrients.

How is CABG performed ?

This is an open heart surgery unlike angioplasty. The heart may be temporarily blocked to keep it still during the surgery (the heart lung machine: the pump keeps the blood circulation on for the time being). The healthy artery from the veins from the leg or an artery from the chest would be removed which is called a ‘graft’. This graft is then placed on the ends of the affected artery and thus the blood now circulates through the graft which is the new passage.

Who needs CABG?

When the symptoms become very severe, there might be a possibility for you to go through this surgery. The symptoms though not exhaustive are mentioned below as the following:

1. Chest Pain

2. Abnormal heart rhythms

3. Shortness of Breath

4. Indigestion

5. Swelling of hands

Who is not a candidate of CABG ?

The symptoms mentioned above may take place due to the blockage but not every situation requires a surgery. Only when they are severe you should consult a doctor. Healthy diet and exercises that can have a positive effect on your lungs and heart are always advisable.

What are the results of CABG ?

If no complications arise, then probably you can go home after 4-5 days from the surgery. Intense care will be provided and the doctors will see and conduct various tests to check the health. The fluids will collect around the heart causing swelling which would eventually die out soon. A catheter may be inserted to allow the body to excrete urine and would be removed once you are able to get up.

What is the approval process for CABG ?

The doctors will conduct the various tests required to know the intensity of the problem and then conclude if it is required or not. Once it is, the doctor will explain the surgery and you are free to ask questions related to the same. Good health is another ingredient required for the surgery to take place and the doctor after scrutinizing your medical history if decides, then the approval process is complete.

What are the risks of CABG ?

The various are the risks that can occur after the surgery:

1. Death

2. Pneumonia

3. Kidney Failure

4. Infection at the incision site

5. Blood clots that may be the reason for heart attacks in the future
