What is Coronary Angiogram ?

A coronary angiogram is a procedure that uses a special dye (contrast material) and X-ray imaging to see your heart's blood vessels. An angiogram of the heart, a coronary angiogram, is used for the evaluation of coronary artery disease. The X-ray machine takes images of the dye in the heart blood vessels to know the condition of these vessels and to locate any blockage. Coronary angiograms are part of a group of procedures known as heart (cardiac) catheterization.

Why is Coronary Angiogram done?

This procedure is recommended in certain symptoms:

1. Pain in chest, jaw, neck or arm that is not explained by other tests

2. Symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as chest pain (angina)

3. New or increasing chest pain (unstable angina).

4. Congenital heart disease

5. Heart failure

6. Other blood vessel problems or a chest injury

7. A heart valve problem that requires surgery

8. Surgeries unrelated to heart but may pose risks to heart

How is a Coronary Angiogram Performed?

In most cases, these are scheduled in advance so that you get time to prepare and find the best hospital to go to. HealthKhoj helps you in finding these hospitals and work with you to get price estimates and fix appointments. Angiograms are performed in the catheterization (cath) lab of a hospital. The hospital staff will check your vital signs and make a note of your medications and medical history. Always check with your doctor in advance on which medicines you can take. You may be given a sedative to help you relax. A catheter is inserted in your body. It normally should not cause pain. Dye (contrast material) is injected through the catheter. The dye is easily seen on X-ray images. Your doctor can observe its flow and identify any blockages or constricted areas.

The total procedure takes few hours. In most cases you will go back from the hospital the same day.

What are the results of Coronary Angiogram ?

Results of this procedure could be one of the following:

1. There are no blockages, nor any narrowing of the heart blood vessels.

2. Reveal how many of your coronary arteries are blocked or narrowed.

3. Detect how much blood flow is blocked through your blood vessels.
