What is Angioplasty ?

Angioplasty or Coronary Angioplasty or Percutaneous intervention is a process by which the clogged heart arteries can be opened. In a nutshell, it is a procedure by which a balloon is temporarily inserted and inflated in the target area so that the clogged area is widened due to the inflation. This can help against symptoms of blocked arteries that may include chest pain & shortness of breath.

How is Angioplasty performed?

There are several ways by which such a process can be executed. They consist of:

Balloon - As stated above, this includes the puffing up of a small balloon inside the artery. The stretching of the artery leads to more circulation of blood through the heart.

Stent - A small tube that is inserted inside the artery is inflated with the help of the balloon. Once the inflation has taken place, the tube takes shape of the artery which now turns into the passage for blood flow. The balloon is deflated and is removed safely.

Rotablation - A diamond cathter is guided into the artery whose tip spins cleaning away the plaque that stops the smooth blood flow.

Atherecomy - This is a combination of balloon and Rotablation for each tip of the affected region helping more blood to circulate.

Who needs Angioplasty ?

The people that would in normal course have the possibility of going through this procedure are:

People with a surgery (heart or any related) in the past.

Damage to the artery may occur where the sheath is inserted- the chance of this kind of damage is less than one out of 100 cases.
